Zigzag Sorter: High-Density Sortation When Floor Space Is the Constraint
With its Z-shaped pattern and integrated DWS unit, the Rotonix zigzag sorter delivers 3,000 parcels per hour at 99.7% accuracy in 40% less space.

In many distribution and fulfillment centers, the binding constraint is not budget or capacity — it is the hall itself. When floor space is limited but you still need multiple outlets and complete parcel data, linear sorters quickly hit their physical limits. The Rotonix zigzag sorter answers with a Z-shaped movement pattern: up to 3,000 parcels per hour at 99.7% sorting accuracy in 40% less space than a linear sorter, while its integrated DWS unit captures the full profile of every parcel — weight, dimensions, and barcode — at a single point.

In a linear sorter, outlets line up in a row along a straight line, and the number of destinations is a direct function of line length. In the zigzag pattern, outlets are arranged in nested Z-shaped rows, so more destinations fit into the same hall. The result is higher destination density per square meter, no need for space expansion or facility relocation, and the ability to install the system inside existing halls with tight footprints.
The DWS (Dimensioning-Weighing-Scanning) unit is the engineering heart of the system: instead of spreading weight, dimension, and barcode stations across different points of the line, all data is captured at a single point. The result is a complete parcel profile — ID, barcode, weight, dimensions, destination, and priority — ready to use for freight calculation, validation, and full traceability. Weighing accuracy of ±1 g and dimensioning accuracy of ±1–5 mm make this data reliable enough for billing and reporting systems.
If your hall space is limited and outlet density matters, if your target capacity sits between 1,500 and 3,000 parcels per hour, if you need the full parcel profile at a single point, and if WMS/ERP/TMS integration is mandatory, the zigzag sorter is the smart choice. Conversely, if you need very high continuous capacity above 10,000 parcels per hour, if parcels exceed 30 kg or 500×400×400 mm, or if an existing fixed conveyor infrastructure can be reused, Rotonix cross-belt or tilt-tray sorters are the better fit. Transparent engineering positioning is exactly what makes selection trustworthy.
The zigzag sorter is built from modular 4-unit blocks; outlets scale from 2 to 128+ without stopping operations. Depending on the capacity model, feeding is single-point (Z 1500) or dual-point (Z 3000), while the wear-resistant rubber belt with a 2–3 year service life and the industrial carbon-steel structure guarantee stable operation across long shifts.
An industrial PLC with a touch HMI provides real-time monitoring, while Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, and OPC UA protocols plus a REST API connect the system to WMS, ERP, TMS, and SCADA. A management dashboard with key KPIs delivers real-time reporting. On the safety side: mechanical guarding, emergency stop, access interlocks, chute fullness and jam monitoring, and a controlled manual mode for line recovery; a noise level below 72 dB and an operating range of 0–45°C suit real working environments.
The Rotonix zigzag sorter is the answer for centers where space is scarce but data and accuracy are non-negotiable: postal sorting and exchange centers, e-commerce fulfillment, express hubs, pharmaceutical and healthcare distribution, time-critical food and FMCG, and apparel with returns management. 3,000 parcels per hour, 99.7% accuracy, 40% less space, and modularity up to 128+ outlets — a compact combination for high-density sortation.
